Description

By: Molière (1622-1673)

Les Précieuses ridicules by Molière is a delightful comedy that satirizes the affectations and pretensions of a group of young women desperate to be seen as sophisticated and refined. The play follows the antics of two young women who reject suitors they deem beneath their social status, only to be hilariously exposed and ridiculed for their shallow and ridiculous behavior.

Molière’s sharp wit and keen observations on human nature shine through in this play, as he pokes fun at the absurdity of a society obsessed with superficial appearances and social status. The characters are colorful and exaggerated, each representing a different facet of vanity and shallowness.

The humor in Les Précieuses ridicules is both clever and timeless, making it a joy to read or watch even centuries after it was first performed. Molière’s skillful use of language and comedic timing keep the audience entertained from start to finish, while also offering a subtle critique of the societal norms and expectations that drive people to such ridiculous extremes.

Overall, Les Précieuses ridicules is a charming and insightful comedy that reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously and to appreciate the true value of sincerity and authenticity over empty appearances. It is a classic work of French literature that continues to entertain and resonate with audiences today.

Book Description:
