The Convivio (The Banquet) is a philosophical treatise in the form of a prosimetrum. Dante combines prose and verse to explicate much of his philosophy and, more generally, the scientific, political, and historical thought of his day. Following the death of Beatrice in his earlier work the Vita nova (New Life), Dante here praises his new love, Lady Philosophy. The poet never finished the Convivio, and shortly after abandoning it began work on his Divine Comedy.
