Read in English by audible1 Volunteers.

Harper’s Young People is an illustrated weekly publication for children that includes short stories, tales from history, natural history, poetry, puzzles, and other fun. This 41st issue of the serial was published on August 10th, 1880. In this issue, “The Moral Pirates” enjoy a day of rest until campsite intruders put the boys in great danger; newly-arrived Russian immigrant, Karl, impresses his fellow immigrants and a Russian soldier with his brilliant mind in “The Boy Emigrant in Russia”; and Charley and Jeff enter a fishing competition with a friendly stranger and are impressed with his fancy fishing gear and his day’s haul in “The ‘Boss’ Fish”. Other highlights of this issue include the story, “Why Pickle gave the German teacher a present,” in which the prankster, Pickle, plays a cruel joke but learns a valuable lesson; a third letter from young Bessie Maynard to her doll at home with updates on her (mis)adventures while on summer holiday in Maine in “Sea Breezes”; the tale of twins Tottie and Lillie who attempt to tame “The Greedy Little Mouse” that lives in their home, her “thievery”, however, leads to a far different outcome; and, “The Story of the American Navy”, which continues in its fifth part and tells of the conflicts and naval battles that led up to the War of 1812. This periodical was published by Harper & Brothers, known today for their publications Harper’s Bazaar and Harper’s Magazine. – Summary by Jill Engle
