Description

By: Walter Pater (1839-1896)

Marius the Epicurean by Walter Pater is a beautifully written novel that delves deep into the philosophical and spiritual journey of a young Roman nobleman named Marius. Set in the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the story follows Marius as he navigates the conflicting ideals of Stoicism and Epicureanism, seeking meaningful experiences and a sense of purpose in his life.

Pater’s prose is lyrical and evocative, painting vivid descriptions of ancient Rome and its inhabitants. The novel is rich in detail, immersing the reader in the sights, sounds, and smells of the city, as well as the intricate rituals and customs of Roman society.

At its core, Marius the Epicurean is a meditation on the nature of happiness, the pursuit of beauty and pleasure, and the search for spiritual fulfillment. Through the character of Marius, Pater explores the different ways in which individuals can find meaning and purpose in a world filled with turmoil and uncertainty.

Overall, Marius the Epicurean is a thought-provoking and deeply moving novel that will appeal to readers interested in philosophy, history, and the human experience. Pater’s elegant prose and insightful reflections on life and morality make this a timeless classic that is sure to resonate with readers long after they have finished the book.

Book Description:

Marius the Epicurean is a philosophical novel written by Walter Pater, published in 1885. In it Pater displays, with fullness and elaboration, his ideal of the aesthetic life, his cult of beauty as opposed to bare asceticism, and his theory of the stimulating effect of the pursuit of beauty as an ideal of its own. The principles of what would be known as the Aesthetic movement were partly traceable to this book; and its impact was particularly felt on one of the movement’s leading proponents, Oscar Wilde, a former student of Pater at Oxford.
