Description

By: José Rizal (1861-1896)

Noli Me Tangere is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that sheds light on the injustices and abuses of the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines during the 19th century. Through the story of Crisostomo Ibarra, a young man who returns to his homeland after studying in Europe, author José Rizal masterfully exposes the corruption and oppression that plagued Filipino society at the time.

Rizal’s vivid and detailed descriptions of the social inequality, political corruption, religious hypocrisy, and cultural discrimination faced by the Filipino people are both heart-wrenching and eye-opening. The characters in the novel are richly developed, each representing a different facet of society, from the poor and oppressed to the wealthy and powerful.

The novel’s themes of love, betrayal, justice, and revenge are woven together seamlessly, creating a gripping and engaging narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Rizal’s sharp wit and biting satire add a layer of complexity to the story, forcing readers to reflect on the deeper implications of the social issues he presents.

Overall, Noli Me Tangere is a timeless masterpiece that continues to resonate with readers today. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice and fighting for a more just and equitable society. With its compelling story and profound message, this novel is a must-read for anyone interested in Philippine history and literature.

Book Description:
Noli Me Tangere (Latin for Touch Me Not) is a novel by the National Hero of the Philippines, Dr. José Rizal. It was originally written in Spanish, and first published in Germany in 1887. Noli Me Tangere exposed the corruption and abuse of the Spanish government and clergy towards the Philippine people and the ills of the Philippine society. This novel, and its sequel El Filibusterismo were banned in many parts of the Islands. Rizal was later arrested for inciting rebellion, based largely on his writings, and was excuted in Manila. Noli Me Tangere, and the execution of Rizal, indirectly influenced the Philippine revolution from Spain. Today, Noli Me Tangere is required reading in all Philippine Schools.
