Description

By: US Army Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District

The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki is a detailed and sobering account of one of the most devastating events in modern history. The book provides a comprehensive look at the decision-making process behind the use of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities during World War II, as well as the aftermath and impact on the local populations.

Through a combination of historical documents, personal accounts, and statistical data, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District sheds light on the ethical dilemmas faced by American leaders at the time, as well as the long-term consequences of the bombings. The authors do not shy away from presenting the gruesome realities of the destruction caused by the atomic bombs, making it a difficult but important read for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of war and its effects on civilian populations.

Overall, The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki is a well-researched and insightful examination of a tragic chapter in human history. It serves as a reminder of the devastating power of nuclear weapons and the need for continued efforts towards peace and disarmament.

Book Description:

This is the official report, published nearly 11 months after the first and only atomic bombings in history (to date), of a group of military physicians and engineers who accompanied the initial contingent of U.S. soldiers into the destroyed cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The report presents a clinical description of the devastation, loss of life and continued suffering of the survivors that resulted from the world’s first and only atomic bombings. The appendix is an eyewitness account, contrasting vividly with the dispassionate sang-froid of the report itself, written by a German Jesuit priest who survived the blast at Hiroshima, and whose order assisted in rescue efforts following the catastrophic attack. This recording was completed on the 63rd anniversary of the events.
