Description

By: Anges Strickland, Elisabeth Strickland (1796-1874)

The Lives of the Queens of England is a comprehensive and engaging historical account of the women who have held the title of Queen of England throughout the centuries. The authors, Agnes and Elisabeth Strickland, have meticulously researched and documented the lives of these influential women, providing readers with fascinating insights into their personalities, actions, and impact on English history.

What sets this book apart is its focus on the personal lives and experiences of the queens, rather than just their political interactions. The authors delve into their relationships, rivalries, and challenges, painting a vivid picture of the human side of these historical figures. From the powerful and sometimes ruthless queens like Mary I and Elizabeth I, to the more romantic and tragic figures like Anne Boleyn and Mary, Queen of Scots, each woman’s story is presented with sensitivity and depth.

The writing is both informative and engaging, making it a captivating read for both history enthusiasts and casual readers alike. The Strickland sisters have a talent for bringing history to life, making the past feel relevant and relatable to contemporary audiences. Overall, The Lives of the Queens of England is a must-read for anyone interested in the lives of these remarkable women who have shaped the course of English history.

Book Description:
The Lives of the Queens of England is a multi-volumed work attributed to Agnes Strickland, though it was mostly researched and written by her sister Elizabeth. These volumes give biographies of the queens of England from the Norman Conquest in 1066. Although by today’s standards, it is not seen as a very scholarly work, the Stricklands used many sources that had not been used before.

Volume one includes the biographies of Matilda of Flanders, Matilda of Scotland, Adelicia of Louvaine, Matilda of Boulogne and Eleanora of Aquitaine.
