Description

By: William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

A Personal Anthology of Shakespeare, compiled by Martin Clifton, is a delightful collection of Shakespeare’s most renowned works. With a diverse selection of sonnets, soliloquies, and excerpts from his plays, this anthology offers readers a comprehensive overview of Shakespeare’s poetic genius.

Clifton’s thoughtful curation showcases the depth and complexity of Shakespeare’s writing, encompassing themes of love, loss, power, and betrayal. Each piece is accompanied by insightful commentary, providing valuable context and analysis that enhances the reader’s understanding of Shakespeare’s timeless words.

Whether you are a seasoned Shakespeare enthusiast or a newcomer to his work, A Personal Anthology of Shakespeare is a must-read. Clifton’s expertly curated selection highlights the Bard’s enduring relevance and showcases why his works continue to captivate audiences centuries after they were written. This anthology is a valuable addition to any bookshelf and a perfect introduction to the genius of William Shakespeare.

Book Description:

This personal anthology is my choice of speeches from Shakespeare that I enjoy reading (that I would like to have had by heart years ago!) and that seem to me to illustrate his unsurpassed use of language. He was a man who seemed to know everything about human nature and as Orson Welles said ‘he speaks to everyone and we all claim him’. I know that it has been said that ‘it is impossible to be a great Shakespearian actor without an idiosyncratic and extraordinary voice’ and this may be so, but that does not preclude ordinary mortals from reading, hearing and enjoying Shakespeare.
