Description

By: Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904)

In Ghostly Japan by Lafcadio Hearn is a captivating collection of Japanese ghost stories that will send shivers down your spine. The author’s vivid descriptions and engaging storytelling transport readers to a world where spirits, demons, and supernatural beings roam freely. Each tale is filled with eerie twists and turns, leaving readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.

Hearn’s deep knowledge of Japanese culture and folklore shines through in these haunting narratives, making them both culturally rich and deeply unsettling. From vengeful ghosts seeking retribution to shape-shifting demons causing havoc, each story is a masterful blend of horror and mythology.

What sets this collection apart is Hearn’s ability to create atmospheric settings that pull readers into the heart of each story. Whether it’s a haunted temple in the mountains or a cursed village by the sea, the landscapes he paints are as chilling as they are enchanting.

Overall, In Ghostly Japan is a must-read for fans of ghost stories, Japanese folklore, and supernatural fiction. Hearn’s timeless tales will linger in your mind long after you’ve finished reading, leaving you with a newfound appreciation for the power of storytelling to both haunt and enchant.

Book Description:
This collection of 14 stories collected by Lafcadio Hearn, contains Japanese ghost stories, but also several non-fiction pieces. Hearn tries to give a glimpse into the customs of the Japanese, by giving examples of Buddhist Proverbs and explaining the use of incense and the nation wide fascination with poetry. Furthermore, he has again translated several hair-rising ghost stories, like “A Passional Karma” about the truly undying love of a young couple.
