Sonnets from the Portuguese was first published in 1850. There is debate about the origin of the title. Some say it refers to the series of sonnets of the 16th-century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões. However, “my little Portuguese” was a pet name that Robert Browning, her husband had adopted for Elizabeth and this may have some connection. – Summary by Wikipedia
